House Tours
Experience the Magic of Camfield Place
Step inside one of Hertfordshire’s most enchanting country houses and discover the stories, landscapes and characters that shaped it. Our exclusive tours are personally led by Dame Barbara Cartland’s granddaughter, who grew up at Camfield and shares first-hand memories of life in this extraordinary home—its famous visitors, its hidden corners, and the remarkable woman who made it world-renowned.
Walk through rooms where two iconic authors found inspiration:
-
Beatrix Potter, who recorded Camfield through her ‘Memories of Camfield Place’ (c.1891)
-
And Barbara Cartland, whose dazzling literary career unfolded within these very walls.
Enjoy high tea in the magnificent dining room, wander through the historic gardens and stand beside the legendary Deer Oak, under which Barbara Cartland rests—an oak first associated with Elizabeth I and still a witness to centuries of Camfield’s story.
From ancient woodland valleys to the parkland shaped by generations of visionary owners, every step reveals part of the estate’s remarkable journey—now entering a new phase of restoration and renewal under the family.
Tours are intimate and limited to just 18 guests, ensuring a personal and unforgettable experience.

Educational
Learning at Camfield Estate
Connecting people, nature and the working landscape
Camfield Estate is opening its gates to a new kind of learning experience — one that invites people to explore how a modern rural estate works, how landscapes are restored, and how nature, farming and heritage come together to shape the world around us.
We believe that everyone should have the chance to understand the land that sustains them. Our educational programme is designed to bring schools, community groups and adult learners into the heart of the estate to learn not just about the countryside… but with the countryside.
A Living Classroom
Camfield is a landscape in transition. Our meadows, orchards, walled garden, woodlands, lakes and parkland are being carefully restored and managed for the future — and we want people to experience that journey with us.
Visitors won’t simply see the finished results. They will be part of the story as habitats recover, heritage features are brought back to life, and new approaches to farming and land management take shape.

What You Can Discover
Our learning experiences explore the themes that shape a modern estate:
✓Nature & Biodiversity
Discover how woodlands, meadows, ponds and wildflower areas support wildlife, and how we’re restoring these habitats for the long term.
✓Farming & Food Production
Learn how we manage grassland, crops, are introducing native-breed livestock, and how food can be produced in ways that work with nature rather than against it.
✓Climate & Resilience
Explore how water, woodland and landform help landscapes adapt to a changing climate.
✓Heritage & Landscape Story
Follow the history of Camfield’s designed landscape — including the walled garden, parkland and lakes — and see how the past guides our stewardship today.
✓Restoration in Action
Experience the realities of restoring a rural estate: the decisions, the challenges, and the craft of long-term care for land and heritage.

— A Heritage Experience
For Schools, Groups and Adult Learners
We welcome:
-
Primary and secondary schools
-
Further and higher education groups
-
Community and charity groups
-
Adult learners seeking hands-on experience
-
Volunteers who want to contribute to the estate’s restoration
Our location near London makes Camfield easily accessible to many communities with limited access to countryside environments. Inclusion and accessibility are central to our approach.
A Space for Learning
We plan to develop a dedicated education centre on the estate, but aim for learning to begin straight away. This will provide involvement in the journey not just the results of the journey.
Join Us with our restoration
Camfield Estate is becoming a place where people can reconnect with nature, understand the land beneath their feet, and see first-hand how landscapes are shaped for the future.
We want to share this journey openly — to inspire, to educate, and to build long-lasting connections between people and place.
Whether you’re a teacher, a community leader, a student or simply curious, we look forward to welcoming you to Camfield.
Come and learn with us.
